The Will or Destiny

"The will of men who are put to the test can often supercede the will of destiny." Tristan Bernard

During the time of Napoleon, a great French general names La Varieremade made the decision to attack, even though his troops were largely out numbered. He was certain of victory, but he felt his men's fear and wanted to do something to cut short their protestations.

On a country road he stopped before an isolated chapel and declared, "I am going inside and I will ask for God's help. Then I will come out and flip this gold coin. If our Emperor's face appears we will win. If the other side comes up heads, then we will lose. And so, my companions, our fate is in the hands of destiny." After a few moments in the chapel, La Variere came out and flipped the coin. Napoleon's head appeared. The soldiers shouted and acclaimed their destiny, and the entire company's moral was lifted.

Convinced that they would be victorious, they fought with such bravery that they rapidly won the battle. After the victory Vermont, one of La Variere's adjutants, said, "Oh Sir, noone can change the course of Destiny. This unexpected victory is yet another proof of that." "Who knows, my dear Vermont, who knows," replied the General, and he showed him the coin on which Napoleon's head appeared... on both sides!

"Destiny is stronger than the will of man." We have often heard that said, especially by those who renounce life, who prefer to walk with their heads bowed and their backs curved, because it's easier to do so than to confront events. Hazard does exist, as do all the problems that plague men. That's a fact. But one should not seek to impose any intention on these things, as if there were a curse on humanity or some transcending evil. Intelligence, an entrepreneurial spirit, courage and yes, even trickery, can affect the order of things. And why even assume that there is apre-established order?

Today is your day! Your time is right now, flip that coin and make it happen!

Seven Techniques for Overcoming the Tendency to Procrastinate

The science of physics recognizes two kinds of inertia - both of which can be related to procrastination. The first law states, "Standing objects tend to remain stationary." The second law is the inverse: "Moving objects tend to stay in motion."

Procrastination is stationary inertia. We aren't moving, and we therefore don't move!

Procrastination overcome, however, moves us into the arena where the law of motion takes over. We frequently find that once we've started a project or process, we stay with it until completion. One of my favorite sayings from my friend Dr. Robert Schuller is posted on my word processor: "Beginning is Half Done!" (I've modified it to say, "Beginning is Half Won!")

Here are seven techniques to overcome procrastination:

1. Take five minutes to identify what you are putting off.
On a blank sheet of paper, note several important activities that you realize you are delaying or have put on hold.

2. Look at your list of tasks and do one of them right now.
Put the energy you've been directing toward excuses into the activity you've been avoiding. You'll discover that action eliminates anxiety.

3. If getting started is the hard part for you, set a designated time slot in the day to work on the list.
Set aside thirty minutes of your lunch hour for work specifically on one job, project, or personal goal that you've been avoiding or find difficult to start.

4. Don't worry about perfection.
What counts is quality of effort, not perfect results. Don't let yourself get bogged down with a preoccupation for perfectionism.

5. If what you are putting off involves other people, consult with them.
Your reasons for delaying action may be imaginary. Lack of communication often turns molehills into mountains.

6. If you fear the consequences associated with the action you've been avoiding, ask yourself, What's the worst thing that could happen If I did this today?
The worst-case scenario most likely would be a minor inconvenience or a temporary setback.

7. Finally, Vividly picture how you'll feel once the task is done.
Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from nagging pressures. Freedom from self-doubt. Accomplishing put-off tasks will give you a great boost of confidence and energy!

Ground breaking requires TNT. To blast your way out of apathy and overcoming procrastination. Remember what TNT means: Today! Not Tomorrow!

Courage to Get Back Up

Craig B. Larson, writing in "Fresh illustrations for preaching and teaching," makes an interesting observation about "getting knocked down:" Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe falls 10 feet from its mother's womb and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its body. From this position it considers the world for the first time and shakes off the last vestiges of the birthing fluid from its eyes and ears.

Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the reality of life. In his book, A View from the Zoo, Gary Richmond describes how a newborn giraffe learns its first lesson. The mother giraffe lowers her head long enough to take a quick look. Then she positions herself directly over her calf. She waits for about a minute, and then she does the most unreasonable thing. She swings her long, pendulous leg outward and kicks her baby, so that it is sent sprawling head over heels. When it doesn't get up, the violent process is repeated over and over again.

The struggle to rise is momentous. As the baby calf grows tired, the mother kicks it again to stimulate its efforts. Finally, the calf stands for the first time on its wobbly legs. Then the mother giraffe does the most remarkable thing. She kicks it off its feet again. Why? She wants it to remember how it got up. In the wild, baby giraffes must be able to get up as quickly as possible to stay with the herd, where there is safety. Lions, hyenas, leopards, and wild hunting dogs all enjoy young giraffes, and they'd get it too, if the mother didn't teach her calf to get up quickly and get with it.

The late Irving Stone understood this. He spent a lifetime studying greatness, writing novelized biographies of such men as Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh, Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin. Stone was once asked if he had found a thread that runs through the lives of all these exceptional people. He said, "I write about people who sometime in their life have a vision or dream of something that should be accomplished and they go to work.’ "They are beaten over the head, knocked down, vilified, and for years they get nowhere.

But every time they're knocked down they stand up. You cannot destroy these people. And at the end of their lives they've accomplished some modest part of what they set out to do." Have you learned to get back up? Being defeated is a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent. Steven Covey says, “The proactive approach to a mistake is to acknowledge it instantly, correct and learn from it. This literally turns a failure into a success.”

Success is never final and failure is not fatal. It is the courage to get back up that counts!

You are what you believe. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
